Part 1: How to Set The iPod As A Hard Disk Manually
Not a lot of us know this, but our old iPods can act as excellent hard disks, given that they are so portable and mobile. It is easy to manage as well. Some of these iPods, such as the one I have, can even offer as much as 160 GB of storage space, which is incredible.
So, if that sounds interesting and you also would like to convert your old iPod into an iPod disk, follow the easy steps as given below, and you will be enjoying your old iPod in a new form very soon.
Step 1The first thing that I recommend you must do is to format your old iPod disk as ExFAT, since that will ensure maximum compatibility. You could do that using the Disk Utility feature (on Mac) or by simply right clicking the iPod and selecting the option 'Format' (on Windows).
Step 2With the iPod connected to your computer, launch iTunes, and then select the icon of iPod from the Source pane.
Step 3Now, click on the option called 'Summary', from the list of options given on the left hand side of the iTunes interface.
Step 4Once the Summary section has opened up on the iTunes interface, select the option of 'Enable disk use' or 'Manually manage music and videos', as shown in the screenshot given below. Both these options would allow you to use your iPod as an iPod disk.
Step 5Once you are done with step 4, you will now be able to see your iPod appears as an iPod disk under My Computer (Windows) or Finder (Mac). It will now be possible for you to simply double click on the icon and open your iPod as an iPod disk, view the contents in the iPod disk, and also drag files to or from the said iPod disk as needed.
Part 2: 5 Extra Useful Tips on How to Make The Most of Your iPod
1. Back up your iPod
One of the 1st things you must do before you even think of converting your iPod into an iPod disk is backing it up properly, since the conversion to hard disk can sometimes cause great damage to the data already stored in it.
One of the best software to do that would be the Wondershare TunesGo - iOS Transfer. It allows you to transfer all your music, photos, and videos from iPods, iPhones, and iPads to iTunes or Mac or PC, and even vice versa if needed very easily. This way you can ensure that all the files on your iPod are safely backed up.
2. Ensure a new firmware is installed
More often than anything else, the majority of MP3 players suffer due to their poor quality firmware, including iPods that depend on iTunes heavily. However, nowadays you can easily find better alternatives to iTunes.

For example, TunesGo from Wondershare can do much more than what iTunes does and even better. It is an all-in-one phone manager tool allowing you to transfer, manager, organize on multiple devices (Android, Win, Mac, and iOS).
3. Change the battery
This is another one of the biggest problems that plague MP3 players of all kinds, including iPods. You would know this already if you are an avid user, the battery on your iPod would hardly last 3 years, especially the older generation models.
And poor battery life is one of the primary reasons why most of us find ourselves not using our old iPods very often. But did you know that you can replace the battery on any iPod model? This isn't an easy process, however, is worth giving a try as what use is the iPod. Otherwise, you aren't using it.
4. Install a new hard drive
Not a lot of us think about it, but our iPods too have a hard disk in them, and long term and heavy usage can cause this hard drive to die in time. The good thing though is that just like the battery, you can replace the hard drive in your iPod too.
There are quite a few useful guides on this that you can refer to and the hard disk itself for iPods usually will cost you somewhere between $70-$110 USD. That said, this process is not easy but rather a tough one, so just be extra careful while you work on replacing the hard disk of your iPod.
5. Make the iPod to be your car music player
This probably is one of the best uses of an old iPod, simply for the fact that some of these older generation iPods have storage spaces that can easily dwarf the ones you usually get on your latest smartphones.
So, instead of taking out your expensive and latest phone all the time, when you want to listen to your playlist while in the car, load all of that music on your old iPod and connect it to your car's stereo via aux. The best part is that you can leave the iPod in the car forever even.
